Dr. Modak received his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from BUET in 1989 with distinctions like First Class, First, Honors,
and Record Marks. His superior academic accomplishment earned him the Malik Akram Hossain Gold Medal, Fazlur Rahman
Khan Scholarship, and University Grants Commission Scholarship in Bangladesh. Thereafter he received two masters'
degrees (MS) in Structural Engineering. The first one was from BUET in 1991 and the second one was from the Washington
State University at Pullman in 1995. In 1993 he joined the graduate program in Civil Engineering at Purdue University.
He graduated with a Ph.D. degree in 1997.
Dr. Modak served BUET as a Lecturer for two years. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Modak joined
CSI as a Research Engineer in 1997. Since then, he is one of the lead developers of computer
applications for structural and earthquake engineering at CSI. His current responsibility includes
implementing and maintaining all the design codes in SAP2000, ETABS, and SAFE. This includes
concrete frame design codes, steel frame design codes, aluminum frame design codes, thin wall
sections frame design codes, composite beam design codes, and shear wall design codes for many
countries.
Dr. Modak has contributed to the state-of-the-art of computational structural mechanics as an
accomplished researcher. His research mainly focused on the algorithm development for computational
structural dynamics. Some of his contributions are: development of Generalized Solution Algorithm
for solving linear and nonlinear structural dynamics problems; development of Iterative
Group-Implicit (IGI) Scheme for solving linear and nonlinear structural dynamics problems using
parallel processing, development and implementation of several object-oriented software components
for structural analysis. He has published his work in many reputed international journals,
peer-reviewed conferences papers, many reports, and a book chapter.
He is a member of Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Society, American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE); Structural Engineering Association of California (SEAOC); American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME), Earthquake Engineers Research Institute (EERI); US Association of Computational
Mechanics (USACM); International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM). Dr. Modak is also
serving in two technical subcommittees of ASCE Structural Engineering Institute - Emerging Computing
Technology and Methods of Analysis.
